Classic Chili Family Recipe: Homemade, Flavorful & Easy
This classic chili recipe is a family recipe that has been handed down for at least two generations. It’s got simple ingredients, lots of flavors, and it’s a crowd-pleaser. Ready in less than 30 minutes, you can feed your family a hearty meal with a lot of options for serving.
This is the chili recipe that I recommend to everyone. It’s what I feed all my guests during the fall months, every small group that we host at our home and I make it for at least one meal on every family vacation. It’s just that good! Every time I make it, someone asks for the recipe. So, now I’m sharing it with you! I hope your family loves it as much as we do.
Tools You May Need
- This pot is perfect for making chili, soups or any one pot meal. I do not like to cook foods with high acid content (like tomatoes) in a regular cast iron pot. This ceramic coated one is perfect though!
- Meat chopper for cooking your ground meat.
- Chili Bowls These bowls are deep for serving hearty soups like chili, french onion soup or something like Shepherd’s Pie. They are oven safe and dishwasher safe!
- Serving tray for toppings This tray just makes me happy! So fun for serving and entertaining.
Ideas To Modify & Serve Classic Chili
One of the things I love about chili is how versatile it is to serve! Here are some ways you can enjoy it:
- Serve it with cornbread or warm crusty bread on the side
- Serve it over corn chips with shredded cheese and onions…like a Frito Pie
- Pour it over baked potatoes for a delicious meal
- Put it on hotdogs with cheese and serve them up as chili cheese dogs
- Serve it over french fries or tater tots for a fun snack
Ingredients
- 1 pound of ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 can chili beans
- 1 can dark red kidney beans
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 can tomato paste
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- Toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, onions, corn chips, etc. (optional)
How To Make Classic Chili
In a large pan, cook your ground meat, onions, and peppers together until meat is done and peppers are tender. Drain excess grease. Stir in all remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve with toppings. Enjoy!
