Favorite Fall Children’s Books: Fall & Leaves
Reading books for fall is on our bucket list every year! This post outlines all of our favorite children’s books themed around the fall season and changing leaves.
When the weather starts changing and the calendar turns to September & October, my kids love to grab all of our fall books out of the storage bins and start reading them again. We also make a special trip to the library to grab some of our favorites! Here are some of the books we are reading this year.
We have collected so many favorites, that I decided to split this into two separate posts. This post contains all of our favorite children’s books about fall and leaves. The other post contains all of our favorite children’s books about apples & pumpkins.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS ABOUT FALL
The Autumn Visitors – this book follows a fun family of bears as they enjoy all the holidays of autumn. They attend a county fair, trick or treat for Halloween and enjoy a beautiful Thanksgiving meal with friends. The story is very simple and easy to read. The beautiful watercolor illustrations are the true gem of this tale!
County Fair: My First Little House Books – This fun simple series is adapted from the classic chapter books of Little House On The Prairie. The County Fair follows Almanzo Wilder as a little boy when he experiences the annual county fair. They watch the livestock shows, taste all the yummy foods, and judge the best pumpkins grown that year. It’s a fun introduction to the beautiful Ingalls Wilder families!
Harvest Festival: Berenstain Bears Living Light Series – I remember reading about this loveable family of bears as a little girl. I have loved being able to introduce them to my own boys! This book follows the folks of Bear County as the Chapel In The Woods prepares for its first-ever Harvest Festival. The Living Light series helps children learn how God wants them to live every day with simple lessons. It’s a must-read this fall!
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween – our family absolutely loves the adventures of the little blue truck. My boys have been fans of this truck since they were toddlers. We own every single book! The Halloween book is a beautiful board book with fun lift-the-flap surprises! The story follows the little blue truck as he picks up all of his animal friends for their costume party. It’s a fun book with adorable illustrations. My boys still love opening all of the flaps to see the surprises underneath!
Sophie’s Squash – a sweet story about a little girl who has a new best friend – a squash! This is a story about love, friendship and the change of seasons. It was a sweet autumn read from the library!
God’s Blessings of Fall – this book invites the readers to experience the full dynamic of fall and all of God’s wonderful blessings. The story is full of the sounds of fall, which is a unique perspective that my boys enjoyed. The illustrations in this book are absolutley gorgeous! Full page watercolor illustrations with the beautiful colors of autumn. It really is a beautiful book.
Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn – this story follows a young girl as she says goodbye to summer and hello to all of the changes of autumn. This is a great book to help children understand the changes they see with each new season. The storyline is very simple and easy to read. Once again, this is a book with full page illustrations that are absolutely delightful. We actually used this preschool learning pack to accompany the book the first time we read it. We had a lot of fun with that! This book is a classic for every fall season.
Little Acorn – my boys have declared this book to be their favorite this year! This is a nature story about the life cycle of a tree from acorn to a giant oak tree. It is beautifully illustrated with fun and modern colors! It offers the perfect introduction to trees and their life cycle. It’s a fun addition to any book shelf!
CHILDREN’S BOOKS ABOUT LEAVES
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves – As the leaves fall from his favorite tree, Fletcher (a young fox) is very worried about his tree being sick. This book is all about the change of seasons and how the leaves transition every year. Fletcher’s tree eventually glitters with winter ice in a beautiful site! This book has beautiful illustrations throughout.
Summer Green to Autumn Gold – This book is illustrated with stunning watercolors and collage art. It’s a nonfiction picture book that introduces young readers to the science behind the many colors of leaves. There are fun diagrams, a glossary of new science vocabulary words and some ideas for hands on experiments with leaves. This is a great library find!
Leaf Man – I would say this is a classic fall book to explore leaves and the creativity of a child. Every illustration in the book is made out of fall leaves and there are cuts in the pages to make the book fun and the landscape come alive. This book is playful and whimsical. After reading this books, my boys and I had a great time finding our own creatures when we looked at the leaves outside. I think it’s another great library find!
Always Everly – this is a brand new picture book that was just released this Fall, 2021. It follows the story of Everly, an evergreen tree that cannot understand why her leaves won’t change colors. She tries so hard to fit in with everyone else, but learns a valuable lesson about being yourself in every season. It’s a cute book with a good message!
